Rubens Is Seeded First As the Fall Shows Beckon
A crowd of people relax on a grass bank, enjoying the spectacle of a flamboyant procession celebrating the return of a great general and his army. The columns and alcoves of classical Roman buildings tower over them. Below, trumpeters and pipers blow their instruments and animals are led to the sacrifice. A man balanced precariously high up among a forest of flickering torches lights a taper from a flame, but the tall figure of a priest in brilliant red is the focus of the picture.

Peter Paul Rubens Flemish, – Drawn in luminous light brown ink, the principal figure demonstrates the muscular structure of the back, buttocks, and legs.
Fascinated with the structure of the human body, Peter Paul Rubens then drew two subsidiary views of the same powerful form and a detail of the left arm from a different angle. Rubens produced this drawing sometime during an eight-year stay in Italy, and it shows the strong influence of the new approaches he learned there. The skillfully drawn forms show his complex grasp of the human body in three dimensions. The main figure’s truncated right arm suggests the artist’s study of broken antique statues, while the surging, heroically proportioned forms and the extensive hatching of the musculature display his familiarity with Michelangelo’s drawings.
Scholars believe that Rubens produced this anatomical drawing in preparation for an instructional book on human anatomy, which he never published. After the artist’s death, a printer published an engraving of this drawing in the mids. Field Projects Dept. Science Dept. The J.

Victoria Stapley-Brown. When Peter Paul Rubens came back to Antwerp—where he would go on to establish one of the most prolific artistic workshops of all time—in , after eight years in Italy, he brought back the knowledge and influence of antique works and painters like Caravaggio. The port city, then part of the Spanish Netherlands, had been shattered by war and religious conflict, including the Iconoclastic Furies that destroyed art in churches—making the time ripe for new commissions by the Catholic Church, which was re-affirming its power.
The show includes works the artist made during his time in Italy, such as this self-portrait, in which he self-assuredly looks out at the viewer from a group at the court of Mantua, where he made pieces for the duke Vincenzo Gonzaga. The curator points to the evocative angle of the devastated mother in the foreground: head hung all the way down, with the outline of her nose shown between the curtain of her hair which she grips in one hand.
The slain baby that she holds in the other is already turning blue; scientifically inaccurate, it instead heightens the drama of the scene. This cutout of a giant angel over cm high looks downright strange hanging on the gallery wall among rectangular-format paintings, and had visitors puzzled: was this cut from a composition by Rubens at a later date? But it is quite the opposite story.

Harvey L. Ruben, MD, MPH
He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens’s highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.
He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp. In addition to running a large workshop in Antwerp that produced paintings popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens was a classically educated humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England.

By Hannah Furness , Arts Correspondent. A new display of works by artists including Picasso, Bacon and Freud, is to go on show at the Royal Academy, showing how Rubens influenced art through the ages. The works, by artists in the 20th and 21st centuries, will show how the fleshy nudes of Rubens have echoed down the ages of art inspiration, right to the modern day. The newly-announced exhibition will feature 25 works, including examples from Willem de Kooning, Cecily Brown and Sarah Lucas.
Rubens is more than just a painter of fleshy nudes, new exhibition shows. Peter Paul Rubens: the alpha-male of Western art. Like Warhol, he changed the game of art. The main show, entitled Rubens and his Legacy, aims to prove that the artist stood among the most influential masters of his day, affecting the work of Europe’s best-loved painters right up until the 20th century. The exhibition will also show how quintessentially British landscapes, such as those by Constable and Gainsborough, were directly influenced by the works of Rubens, which were so popular they hung in stately homes across the country.
Nico Van Hout, the curator, has said he hoped to convince visitors the “caricature” of Rubens as a painter of “fleshy, voluptuous women” was only part of the story, as he traces the thread of his influence through art history. I want to show him really as the basis of a lot of other art as well. He is a very influential figure.
